Honor Killing Strikes Again: The Victory of Caste-Politics

I am deliberately omitting a Disclaimer for this post. It surely does talk about a social evil in our country, but I want people to get concerned or better, aroused on reading this. 

After a few months of the show in SATYAMEV JAYATE which talked about honor killings; the husband has been shot dead in his village while he was visiting his sick mother. Even huge media efforts and social awareness didn't save the man from honor killing.

Few More Examples of Inhumanity:

1. In the town of Jhajjar in Haryana, a father allegedly strangled his 21 year old daughter to death just for the trivial reason that she was in love with a guy. 
2. In Uttar Pradesh, a youth who was opposed to his sister’s love beheaded her and threw her head in her lover’s house. This shows how inhumane and devilish one can become when their minds are possessed with spirits like religion and caste.
3. In yet another brutal act of tyranny, a man in Rajasthan had beheaded her daughter with a sword. He was found roaming proudly in the streets with his daughter's head.

What is honor killing? Why does this take place?
Honor killing, in short, is killing of a member of a society or a clan by fellow members because he or she is believed to have brought dishonor to the family in some way. The most important reason behind honor killing has been inter-caste marriages. Honor Killings have been persistent in Indian society particularly in Haryana, western U.P., and Rajasthan. In a country like India strong adherence to caste system has been the driving force behind most of the cases of honor killing.

“Rishton se badi pratha” a tele-serial in Colors Entertainment Channel also echoes this. What is the ideology behind such honor killings?
Jagmati Sangwan , President of The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), (the Haryana wing), that has been fighting “honor killings” says:
Khaps can tell a married couple with a two-year-old baby that their marriage has violated the gotra (marriage) laws and they must now tie rakhis and become siblings. If the couples don’t comply, their families are ostracised. This was common in Haryana. Families got thrown out of the village, fined for Rs 21,000, hit with shoes, tonsured and urinated upon. Even against these, there should be laws. There are layers to the problem. There are many cases involving adolescent girls. There is nothing to help them. But if they ever slip up or the families even suspect anything, they’re killed.
It appears the real reason is to uphold power hierarchies of gender, class, religion and caste. This is a an unscrupulous means of retaining power by those in positions of power! The murdered victims almost always are the individuals ranked lower in society — girls and women, and men from the lower castes or economic classes.

This VIDEO by Wave India although a tad simplistic, clearly shows a stubborn society filled with male chauvinism and oppression of women.

So what is the solution to this brutal spin-off of the caste system?
Laws? How much more laws can the country's belly contain?
Only through proletarian socialist revolution and its extension to the centers of world capitalism can the liberation of those oppressed by caste ever finally be achieved. But only a party that puts itself in the forefront of the fight against caste oppression and all other basic democratic struggles will be able to lead the multi-caste, multi-communal, multi-national proletariat of India to power.

I am sorry to state that we are still bound by our traditional beliefs making us a slave to rigid caste system and a virtual hierarchical order which doesn’t let us get out of itself. It's high time we should raise our voices. In my opinion, such people are nothing but barbaric and brutal murderers and bigoted persons with feudal minds and a lust for power.
