Jab Tak Hai Jaan - a fitting Tribute to Yash Chopra

From a long time I have been wanting to write little reviews of movies I watch. I guess this should be the first one in the line, for the movie, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan".
Before going further, lets hear that 'trusting' voice (from a familiar movie) whose empathy has led to a million & more fans scurrying over his releases. It's my all time favorite!

Again, let me pen a few things about the enigmatic Yash Chopra ji. Chopra’s grand theme was love and it was seldom a simple affair. In his films, it was usually THE greatest treasure that could be attained only after navigating through a maze of complications and enigmatic snuffles. Complex love triangles (Daag and Chandni), convoluted love quadrangle (Silsila), love defying category (Kabhi Kabhie), age-gap amour (Lamhe), young romance & friendship (Dil To Paagal Hai), love as sacrifice (Veer Zara), he has tried to capture love in every hue.

When I first watched the classic, seminal, genre-defining Deewaar, I expected to enjoy it, but I didn't think I'd be blown away. I should have known better. Yash Chopra's best direction ever, in my view. But as time advanced, criticisms started to amount, but never along that path, he stopped, and continued weaving those beautiful stories. Music was always a hallmark of his romantic movies. He took pride in the fact that his films had some of the most beautiful lyrics ever written in Hindi cinema — and the picturisation did full justice to the lines. Amitabh Bachchan’s sonorous rendition of poetry in Silsila can still induce goosebumps. The beauty and the balance of it all was that you could watch these movies as much with your lover as with your grandmother. No surprise, a majority of movie-goers found them engaging and appealing as the box-office records suggest.

Now lets move on to Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

I dont agree with anyone who does not like Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Please read my review wholly and carefully before starting to comment against it.
First of all, times have changed now. You people's mindsets have changed. No more anyone likes a 3 hour movie. That is one major factor. Again, people now-a-days generally accept movies which aren't heavy on their brains and values; which are light and entertaining. How else could movies like Golmaal 3, Ready, Ek Tha Tiger, or the recent Son of Sardaar fetch hefty profits? That's also one factor.
Secondly it is one of Yash Chopra's grandest experiments. You could not see that love conquered over ageism (Shahrukh-40 plus, romancing Katrina) love conquered over class society (Shahrukh-poor, loving Katrina-rich) love conquered over religion (Shahrukh's best friend in the film is from Lahore) and love conquered over values (Katrina's mom breaking tradition for her love). And I, for one, resent the famed reviewers who brand a great friend as "fat, good-for-nothing Pakistani". If that's not classism, what else is? Love even conquered over belief of God, which I fully support. Even the marriage-is-a-bliss stereotype in Indian Society is questioned when we see Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh happily living without marriage.
And for those who ask how can a man working in the streets of London go and join Indian Army, this portrays Hope- of the millions living in poverty and societal clutches in our country- hope that everyone could be what he/she wants to be, regardless of his/her class, age, or financial status.

This Shah Rukh Khan starrer was the last swansong of Yash Chopra's lustrous career. Unfortunately he was not there to see it. Quite truly, this last film ironically says, "The Man Who Can't Die".
